Biography
For more than twenty years, Susan Kadis has served the residents of Thornhill in a distinguished leadership capacity. A married mother of five grown children, Mrs. Kadis has consistently stood up for what Thornhill cares about – a safe, healthy and vibrant community. As the Member of Parliament for Thornhill, these objectives continue to be her motivation and strength.
First elected to the House of Commons on June 28, 2004, Mrs. Kadis quickly established herself as a valued member of the government caucus and the Prime Minister’s Team. After winning re-election in January 2006, Mrs. Kadis has held several opposition posts including the Associate Critic of Infrastructure and Communities, Critic for Science and Research and is currently a member of the Economic Prosperity Caucus. She has served Parliament as the Vice-Chair for the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, Member of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology and is currently the Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Health.
In the previous session of Parliament, she was unanimously elected Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women. She was also elected as the Chair of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Liberal Caucus by her colleagues in October 2004. Under her leadership, the caucus successfully advocated for a coordinated strategy to combat the growing urban violence in the city. Known for her unwavering commitment to the community, Mrs. Kadis tackles all the issues and challenges with energy and determination. In addition to her committee and caucus work, Mrs. Kadis is a member of numerous parliamentary groups including the Liberal Parliamentarians for Israel, the Canada Israel Friendship Group, the Canada US Parliamentary Association, the Canada Europe Parliamentary Association, Canada Italy Parliamentary Association and the Canada-India Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Mrs. Kadis is the former publisher of The Thornhill Times community newspaper and was first elected to public office as a school trustee. She also served as a Vaughan City Councillor for two terms where she earned a reputation as a local champion for community residents.
As a 14-year breast cancer survivor, Mrs. Kadis served on the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's Board of Directors. As always, she used her personal experience to help others. Improving and protecting our national health care system will always to be a top priority for her.
In both her public and private life, Mrs. Kadis demonstrates a deep and abiding respect for Thornhill residents and the issues that affect them. Her record of service on behalf of the community is second only to her devotion to it. Susan’s strong and effective voice has consistently achieved results for our community.
Mrs. Kadis, a graduate of York University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, is eager to continue applying her proven leadership ability, extensive experience and long-standing commitment to the community as the Member of Parliament for Thornhill.
